Home Sweet Home

June 17

He’s home!

He’s happy and relaxed, but very weak and very tired. Balancing food and beverages so he doesn’t feel too full too quickly while he hydrates properly and eats well (he’s already lost 12 pounds) is a real challenge and will continue to be for a while. The dietitian gave him some guidelines and the big no-nos at the moment are: any sort of pastry made with seeds, dried fruits and nuts; very sweet things like muffins or doughnuts; coarse cereals like bran or granola; sweet sauces; fried proteins; highly seasoned or spicy meats; soups with heavy cream or high in fat; sweetened fruit products like jam and canned fruit; chocolate; ice cream; sweets in general; alcohol; coffee; pop. He will be able to slowly add these in and see. For instance, in a few (4 to 6) weeks he could take a bite of a cookie, wait three hours and see how his stomach reacts. What we know for sure is that he will eventually get back to eating more or less as usual, just in smaller quantities.

We are both sleep deprived and looking forward to a good night’s sleep. He’s been having some pretty erratic sleep patterns and some crazy dreams. He needs to have a few hours quiet reading or relaxing time before he goes to bed so his mind also quiets down. Today we’ll head to bed early, hopefully around 9:30. He’s presently relaxing and taking it easy. I will be turning off the phones and computers after 8:30 pm, so we can really rest. Maybe one night of rest will make us feel brand new tomorrow. I’m hoping so!

Darlings

I am in Saul Ste Marie tonight, reading this from my hotel room. I hope that everything will go well.
